Taranaki Area
Established on 7 November, 1961 with the start of the Area system. The Taranaki region has had a long and significant Maori history, dating back some 1,000 years. Many acient pa (fortified village) sites can be seen around Taranaki. This area played a significant role in the Land Wars of the 1860's and Land Claims are still being heard before the Treaty Waitangi Commission.
